Presentation synopsis:
Managing
Project Risks - A Practical Approach:
Risks are a fact of
life. We deal with them on a daily basis, and we
instinctively employ strategies to manage them
appropriately. Uncertainties are inherent in every
project, and we need to apply a structured approach to
effectively manage risks to ensure projects success.
A Project Manager
manages each of the Project Management 9 knowledge
areas, but project risks stand out. In addition to
being one of the knowledge areas, risks are a component
of each of the other areas as well.
What risks to manage …
how do we rank risks … who do we get involved in the
process … how do we transition form qualitative Risk
Management into quantitative Risk Management … are some
of the questions that will be addressed in tonight’s
speech.

Presentation synopsis:
Agile Inspired
Risk Mitigation Techniques for Software Development
Projects
According to the Chaos Report, causes for failure of
software development projects relate to rapid technology
changes, in-flux business requirements, or failure to
attack risks. To mitigate the risk of failure, project
managers have always been looking for ways to control
complexity, agility and high pace of software
development projects.
Various parametric estimation tools (COCOMO II),
Software Development Life Cycle and Project Management
methodologies have been created to assist project
managers in their quest to plan, execute, control and
succeed. The most widely known methodologies are
Waterfall, RUP, and agile (SCRUM, XP, Feature-Driven
Development).
This workshop discusses software development project
risks, offers overview of methodologies, details agile
techniques, and concludes by suggesting effective risks
responses.

specialized venues such as Gantthead, Oracle Magazine,
Oracle Technology Network, IT ToolBox, The Data
Administration Newsletter and The Journal of Conceptual
Modelling. He also speaks at public events and teaches
courses in Project Management at colleges and
universities in Canada and US.
Presentation synopsis:
Use PMCDF
…Become a Better Project Manager
Project Management Institute (PMI) uses
three dimensions to define what is considered a
“competent project manager”: knowledge, performance and
personal competencies. While a project manager’s
knowledge can be demonstrated by obtaining the PMP or
equivalent certification, assessing the performance and
personal competencies is much more difficult.
PMI addresses this gap with the Project Manager
Competency Development Framework (PMCDF), the Second
Edition being released in October 2007. It now includes
not only a clear definition of competencies required of
project managers, but also examples of evidence to
demonstrate them as well as a process to assess and
improve individual competency level.
This presentation will demonstrate how PMCDF can be used
by any Project Manager to improve their own
capabilities, and apply them within an organizational
context to increase the likelihood for project success.
The goal is to assist the participants in:
-
Understanding required competencies and
how to assess them.
-
Learning how to improve their own
competencies in project management.
-
Adjusting project management competence
to organization particularities.

conditions. From a career perspective it will provide
you an edge since high-profile projects will often
require expertise in negotiation as a primary
requirement for a Project Manager.

experience in utilizing the Harvard Negotiation
Framework for successfully managing projects. You will

- As this was my first event, I really like the
networking chance and enjoyed the info
- Great topic; would love to see a more structured
presentation on the topic
- Excellent execution under the constraints
- Topic was well presented
- Power Point slides at the beginning were too
dense (too much text)
- Start announcement on time; overlap meal time if
needed.
- Refer people to handout for bio, etc. If talking
add extra info.
- For workshop, rethink timing lost to other
section
- Dinner select is not a hit with me nor sauce

Presentation synopsis:
The 15
Fallacies That Will Kill Your Project:
Many executives live in fallacies
preventing them from seeing the truth and missing the
opportunity to apply true leadership that corporations
need. Project managers who depend on the support of
upper management also suffer from these fallacies. This
leads to a lack of interest from sponsors and eventual
termination of the project.
Join us for this presentation as we review these
fallacies and how to avoid them. You will learn:
• The 15 fallacies which kill projects.
• Tactics to protect your project in organizations where
these fallacies exist.
• Communicate positively with sponsors/stakeholders who
have these fallacies.
• Build/change organization culture where you can stop
these fallacies and gain/maintain the support for your
projects.

- venue door is too disruptive
- very interesting presentation
- venue is not that great since door was loud
during the presentation
- event should be shorter
- very good food; presenter may wish to consider
focusing on fewer aspects, but more contrarian to
stimulate thought and use less "trust me" or "it's
wrong", let people reach their own conclusions
- Difficulty to parking, room was cold and there
was a lack of signs; there were mistakes on the
location and the start time of the event
- good presentation, time constrained
- lateness in starting was regretful; excellent
speaker, pity he had to rush; fun, very good
material
- the presentation can be improved by focusing
more on specific subjects; currently the
presentation is pulled together by several
unrelated leadership subjects
- Great personal credibility and
conviction; belief in subject |

Presentation synopsis:
Why Phases are
the Key to Project Performance Evaluation.
One of the mandatory conditions of
implementing EVM has been the need to create an
integrated performance baseline, in which the work
packages and control accounts form the foundation for
not only the time schedule but also the cost budget.
This requirement appears reasonable in theory, but in
practice can be overly restrictive.
Phased earned value analysis (PEVA) addresses that
contradiction and proposes a solution. The key is to
divide the project schedule into phases that are
appropriate to the work flow and the need for gate
reviews. This allows earned value variances, indices and
forecasts to be calculated for each phase. That is when
those indicators can be most useful, as management
examines progress and performance to date – and decide
whether to proceed.
This approach provides major benefits for project
managers in organizations that have not mandated
full-featured EVM, or where the organization wishes to
ease into EVM.

- The presentation more like a
Micro Soft sales talk instead of a PM presentation
- The material in the presentatiom has low value
- Very Informative
- While I enjoyed and was inspired by the
conceptual nature of the presentation, I will need
to further distill the material to apply it on
practical level. Not a bad thing at all, but I
prefer more "nuggets" that I can apply at work
immediately
- Not easy to understand the concept presented
without a specific working example
- Very Unique presenter. The sound echoed
slightly in the room. More of a sale aspect that
other presenters. |

- Moving from being technical
expert to being a project manager
- No Keynote presentation handout. Very
interactive statistics
- Interesting statistics
- Valuable info.
- Good presentation
- Leadership survey - needs to be illustrated…
KPMG top 10 success factors - good!
- Learning about PMI straight from the source!
- Prefer venue closer to subway or free parking
- Speaker/Host should check equipment & speak into
the microphone
- Too IT baised
- Excellent speaker with in depth knowledge in the
profession
- Would prefer either novotel in North York
or Marriott at Eaton Centre
- Door should be open earlier to promote
networking
- Really well organized event
- Sanjay's part took 20minutes. Please reduce the
commercial dramatically
- Good basis. Bit more on IS fundamentals and how
PM's get the gains
- A bit more on how to use findings within
organization; How to work with functional leads to
make projects work
- Question and answer period would be helpful;
Directery of members contact information would be
helpful! Career section on webset would be great
- would like to have a venue north of 401
- way too much sales and admin info. 1/2 hour
speaker and at least 1/2 about the org is too much
about the orga which I can learn via the print out
material
- opening remarks waste of time. Need to proactive
to make it more professional. Went on for 25min.
Only scheduled for 10min. Too much admin
- How many SME's are PMP designated at Microsoft,
KPMG, PWC
-
very informative |

Presentation synopsis:
We know that driving project performance
is not only about “doing projects right” it is about
“doing the right projects”. Yet, doing the right
projects is more than simply individual project
selection, rather it is about how the organization
manages the entire mix of the business’s portfolio of
projects.
Project Portfolio Management (PPM) has been 'hot' at the
Enterprise Level and within the IT Divisions and offers
great benefits, however itself as a 'business technique'
is still maturing and we have seen the good
implementations and the not-so-good implementations of
PPM. Join us in this presentation as we review the
'Deadly Sins' of PPM (and the 'Salvations'). You will
learn:
• 7 Deadly Sins of PPM
• Reasons for project managers to embrace PPM
• Which success factors are critical for realizing the
benefits of PPM
• How maturity levels impact the realization of
benefits.
• The PMI Program and Portfolio Management Standards and
the trends
