Presentation synopsis:
Managing
Project Risks - A Practical Approach:
Risks are a fact of
life. We deal with them on a daily basis, and we
instinctively employ strategies to manage them
appropriately. Uncertainties are inherent in every
project, and we need to apply a structured approach to
effectively manage risks to ensure projects success.
A Project Manager
manages each of the Project Management 9 knowledge
areas, but project risks stand out. In addition to
being one of the knowledge areas, risks are a component
of each of the other areas as well.
What risks to manage …
how do we rank risks … who do we get involved in the
process … how do we transition form qualitative Risk
Management into quantitative Risk Management … are some
of the questions that will be addressed in tonight’s
speech.

Presentation synopsis:
Agile Inspired
Risk Mitigation Techniques for Software Development
Projects
According to the Chaos Report, causes for failure of
software development projects relate to rapid technology
changes, in-flux business requirements, or failure to
attack risks. To mitigate the risk of failure, project
managers have always been looking for ways to control
complexity, agility and high pace of software
development projects.
Various parametric estimation tools (COCOMO II),
Software Development Life Cycle and Project Management
methodologies have been created to assist project
managers in their quest to plan, execute, control and
succeed. The most widely known methodologies are
Waterfall, RUP, and agile (SCRUM, XP, Feature-Driven
Development).
This workshop discusses software development project
risks, offers overview of methodologies, details agile
techniques, and concludes by suggesting effective risks
responses.

Presentation synopsis:
Use PMCDF
…Become a Better Project Manager
Project Management Institute (PMI) uses
three dimensions to define what is considered a
“competent project manager”: knowledge, performance and
personal competencies. While a project manager’s
knowledge can be demonstrated by obtaining the PMP or
equivalent certification, assessing the performance and
personal competencies is much more difficult.
PMI addresses this gap with the Project Manager
Competency Development Framework (PMCDF), the Second
Edition being released in October 2007. It now includes
not only a clear definition of competencies required of
project managers, but also examples of evidence to
demonstrate them as well as a process to assess and
improve individual competency level.
This presentation will demonstrate how PMCDF can be used
by any Project Manager to improve their own
capabilities, and apply them within an organizational
context to increase the likelihood for project success.
The goal is to assist the participants in:
-
Understanding required competencies and
how to assess them.
-
Learning how to improve their own
competencies in project management.
-
Adjusting project management competence
to organization particularities.
