Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) systems are large and complex IT products designed to support and help to manage virtually every area of a firm. In many cases, They integrate the firm’s internal processes with business planning and execution activities of customers and vendors. The performance record of implementing these systems shows less than desired results in term of project cost overruns, serious business disruption, poor functionality use, process inefficiencies or all of the above.

This presentation looks at the typical methodologies used to implement ERP systems, as one of the main sources of project failure and compares them with the principles and practices the PMBOK to determine their “PMBOK compliance”.

Secondly, the presentation introduces the components of an ERP implementation methodology that follows PMBOK, addressing the uniqueness of these projects, in term of technology to be deployed and the business processes to be improved and supported.

Speaker profile:

Executive Consultant and Technology Architect Infosys Technologies Ltd.

Technology and business executive with over 12 years of experience in applying Information Technology to improve organizational effectiveness and create new business opportunities. His responsibilities have included managing projects, clients and teams; analyzing system needs, coordinating system installations and training users.

He has worked in several industries and verticals including Telecommunications, IT Services, State Government, Finance and Retail Credit Processing.

He has developed a strong insight into the life cycle of systems development and Global Delivery Model. Having lived and worked in India, UK, US and Canada, Mohan has gained an international perspective on business and society, along with an ability to think through complex problems.

Mohan has also authored a book titled "Offshoring IT Services: A Framework for Managing Outsourced Projects" . (Publisher: McGrawHill, India, 2006). Mohan is a prolific writer and has written papers and articles in journals including Business Integration Journal, IEEE Computer, Computerworld among others. Writes weekly columns on Tech-Biz trends for Express Computers and BizIndia magazines.

Presentation synopsis:

Technology executives and managers are increasingly being expected to deliver on enterprise globalization strategies. Though best practices, theories and body-of-knowledge on managing projects are well established, there is a distinct void when it comes to practices on managing offshored projects.

Executing and delivering IT application development and maintenance projects involves several layers of complexity; and the chain is only as strong as the weakest link. Managing projects gets more nebulous when it involves orchestrating the efforts and schedules of individuals, teams and resources from across the globe.

Mohan will lead a workshop on offshore outsourcing of IT Services and introduce an Offshoring Management Framework (OMF), to set the context for managing global IT projects. We will attempt to look at some of the intricacies of offshore outsourcing with a specific emphasis on managing and executing projects and initiatives. The author will share best practices, guidelines and risks of managing across time-and-space boundaries. The workshop will also present case studies and examples from the field and participants will be encouraged to share their experiences and observations for the collective learning by the group.

Comments / Like most - Great subject knowledge. Good mix of facts & case study examples. Nice historical context for future.
- Excellent speaker. Very relevant topic.
- Should see if everyone was OK to extend presentation to 9 pm.
- Food was not up to standard of SOC, could be a lot better. Too much construction during presentation. Need a better/louder audio system.
- Food was very dried out.
- Still not totally sure what absolute difference is between Onshore/Offshore except maybe exchange rate and minimum pay in country. All other issues are normal.
- Excellent presentation content.Very informative session. Speaker has deep knowledge of the subject. Mohan Babu was able to respond to all question very well.
- Great presentation. One of the best that I have attended through PMI. Great topic & explaination of the topic.
- Excellent topic!
- Repeat questions so audience can hear.
- Great subject!
- Go for a mike attached to the speaker so that when he/she moves the volume is consistent.
- The speaker is not fully experienced in managing offshore projects, in terms of how to predict, prevent, manage, and anticipate risks.
- A necessary topic for Project Management. The speaker is very experienced and honest.
- Seems to be more of a consultant than hands on practitioner. Presentation lacked depth. He didn't seem to understand or really answer a lot of questions.
- Too much time spent in background in presentation leaving little time at the end for Q & A and further discussion.
-
Very good topic.

Presentation synopsis:

Project Success is only the beginning – Manage your post implementation

In many IT projects, the main focus is to reach a successful “go-live” production. Although the immediate recognition of a successful implementation is measured by the go-live results, in most cases true project success is not determined until the project is well into the post implementation phase and fully transitioned into the business.

This presentation will discuss the factors that influence our priority with “go-live”, and why post-implementation must be given equal importance and proper project management to realize true success and sustain compliance.

Speaker profile:
Boyd Carter, PMP - Director, Compliance Services, Resolver Inc.

Boyd has over thirty years of experience in both technology and corporate environments. As a CIBC Career Banker, his responsibilities included Internal Auditor, Regional Controller, leading the Data Warehousing Group and Project Management.

After an early retirement from CIBC in 1996, he pursued a consulting career with DMR (Now Fujitsu Consulting), LGS (Now IBM Canada) and CGEY (Now Cap Gemini) before becoming an independent contractor in 2003. His broad base of governance-related experience and a unique perspective on compliance -“Its really just good governance” eminently qualifies him as an expert in compliance.

Presentation synopsis:
Remember the “good ole days” when a contract was sealed with a hand-shake and a man’s word was his bond. Probably not; that was before performance bonuses measured by “next quarter’s results” had undue influence in the Executive Suite.

Integrity, in many places, disappeared. Regulatory compliance filled the void. Some say at too high a price, but others say regulatory compliance is just good governance; you’re better off with it than without!

What do you know about regulatory compliance? …

The presentation will address Bill 198 and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 in the context of:

  • What you know you don’t know about compliance

  • What you didn’t know you don’t know about compliance

  • What it means to you as a Project Manager

  • Resources for the Project Manager (On a CD provided to all attendees)

• High-level annotated Microsoft Project Plan

• Description of “must have” resource documents

• Links to the best online resources

Speaker profile:

Bill Richardson, PMP
Bill Richardson is a top tier Project Manager Coach who specializes in helping and championing project managers to their personal best. Inspiring greatness for individuals, teams, communities and organizations, Bill raises the bar for top performance.

Bill is PMP-certified with extensive hands-on experience in leading major technological and change initiatives in the Financial Services industry. He has managed several large-scale Project Management teams in the IT environment including the set up and day-to-day management of centralized PMO functions.

Having worked in a major Canadian Bank in senior positions, Bill brings the unique blend of account management, project management and process management to the realm of maximizing the ROI of projects, program portfolios and people.

As an accomplished speaker, facilitator and trainer, Bill brings years of accumulated corporate experience and know-how to project management organizations, leaders and practitioners, strengthening vision and competencies, and delivering the right solutions for winning products.

Presentation synopsis:
Project managers need to be prepared in any project to professionally communicate the expectations for the sponsor role for four main reasons:

  1. The senior manager or executive may in fact not really understand the expectations and would welcome the guidance.

  2. The senior manager or executive may have interpreted their role in such a way as to either minimize the role the PM or worse, overload the role of the PM. Typically PM’s are less confident in dealing with conflict resolution between themselves and their sponsor than with themselves and their team or other business stakeholders.

  3. The senior manager or executive has no time or desire to be a sponsor. An uncommitted or overworked sponsor needs either persuasion or help.

  4. There is no identified sponsor and no clarity on who should be.

The presentation will address:

Examining what a sponsor should be doing and how do you train them to do it. PM’s should build a comprehensive role definition as a baseline that can be amended as appropriate in discussions prior to the start of the project. This role definition includes such things as:

  • Ensuring strategic significance of the project

  • Providing approval and funding

  • Promoting support from key stakeholders

  • Supporting broad authority for the project manager and team

  • Resolving appropriate conflicts

  • Being accessible and approachable

  • Supporting periodic reviews

  • Supporting a post-project review

  • Encouraging recognition

Presentation synopsis:
The Capability Maturity Model (CMM) is a method for evaluating and measuring the maturity of the software development process of organizations on a scale of 1 to 5. It provides organizations with the essential elements of processes improvement across a project, a division, or an entire organization. Learn what CMM is and what it can do for you

This presentation provides information on CMM, based on the presenter’s experience with the application of CMM in IT organizations. This experience has been gained by leading certification initiatives at maturity level 2 and level 3, being a member of the assessment team, developing and implementing processes to meet CMM requirements as well as observing and evaluating the use of such processes. Specifically, this presentation provides an awareness of the CMM models and how they could be applied to an organization.
