Location: Bell
Trinity Building

Speaker profile:
Carl
Sergeant PMP has risen to AVP in Bell
Canada's Professional Services Group through his
twenty-six year career in the telecommunications sector.
Previously he led 140 PMs, executives and managers who
serviced Bell customer contracts with yearly revenues that
exceeded half a billion dollars, currently he is managing
the initiative he developed - "PRISM".
His extensive project management experience, which
includes harmonizing Ericsson Canada's PM and Engineering
divisions, has given Carl a unique perspective on the
entire Project Management industry. His stature was
recently recognized by the Project Management Institute,
which selected him as one of the fifty most powerful and
influential PM professionals in the world.
Familiar with all styles of effective project management,
Carl has evolved a new approach which replaces rigid,
hierarchical methods with a flexible, "people centric"
model. Designed to address a specific technical issue at
Bell Canada, Carl's "PRISM" program was so successful that
it evolved into a dynamic, stand-alone method.
Carl will share the insights and experiences that led to
the "accidental discovery" of his powerful and portable
problem solving tool which taps into the creative power of
the group to create effective systems which are adaptable
and responsive to the people they are designed to serve.
Presentation synopsis:
- Internet Protocol is totally transforming how we
communicate, work and do business. Telecommunications
companies were first to realize the profound impact that
IP would have on every sector of the company, not only in
terms of technology and infrastructure, but also on all
aspects of process, design and delivery.
- Carl Sergeant will explain how Bell anticipated the
challenges and demands of this truly “disruptive
technology” by creating a flexible, adaptive and people
centred approach to finding simple solutions for complex
Information Communications & Technology (ICT) challenges.
- Bell’s “PRISM” concept comprehensively integrates
eight distinct initiatives into one focused and responsive
tool. It uses a unique approach to streamline Bell’s
operating model, while quickly moving the organization
towards a flexible no barrier - no silos world. Learn how
your company can use this exciting new collaborative
process to reinvent team dynamics while enhancing your
efficiency, productivity and competitive presence in the
marketplace.

What did you like most about this
event? |
- Networking was great
- Opportunity to know about MPA
- Came 1/2 way --> didn't seem connected on Control
- too much, lack of focus for 1.5 hrs seminar
- I has hoped to have some implementation hints and
tips, (not a sales pitch). I really didn't need a
project 101. Wrong presentation for a room of PMP's.
- Topic is timely
- Presenter tried to bring topic to users & Tech
People, Thanks.
- How to manage the introduction of EPM
- Got some EPM info, not as much as expected. Too
much focus on low level project
- The opportunity to keep updated on current topics.
- Food, Subject
- Lecture combined with practical demonstration

Many Projects fail. The reasons are many, however, Project
Managers' skills are always up there, high in the list.

of skills. In this presentation Arie will list and discuss
the skills essential to project success.

software.
Presentation synopsis:
Over the last decade, a large number of studies were
performed on the internal world and the interpersonal
dimension of people. In relation to this, experience has
proved that Information System Project Management is not
all about figureheads or movers of life-size
chess-pieces, but rather about individual and personal
leadership. Information System implementations are more
about each project team member’s set of characteristics
and their strengths to draw on various power bases, to
influence group members while directing their activities
towards a common goal.
This presentation provides you an overview of
roles-and-responsibilities of leadership qualities
essential for the project implementation life cycle. You
will hear from the expert on how to take advantage of
some leadership models, including qualities and
abilities required in team members to successfully
complete assigned tasks.

Bio:
Prof. Norrie is an Assistant Professor at Ryerson
University. He teaches Project Management, IT Strategy,
Systems Design, and Business Process & Performance
Improvement. He is currently serving as the interim
Director for the School. He conducts industry-related
research, speaks regularly at professional/academic
conferences and provides consultancy to a variety of
companies, particularly in the high-tech and
telecommunications sectors. Earlier in his career, Prof.
Norrie was both an entrepreneur and successful
executive. He also serves as an independent member,
Chairman of the Board of Directors or Advisor of several
corporate boards.
Prof. Norrie is currently enrolled in Doctoral
studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT)
where his thesis research follows his natural interests
in project management effectiveness, particularly as it
relates to the issues of optimizing strategic choices in
project portfolio selection.
Presentation outline:
Managing a single project can be strategic. Managing
multiple projects MUST be strategic. As much as we talk
about Project Portfolio Management (PPM), there are
limited sources of theory and practice that work.
Aligning projects to purely financial returns can be
ruinous and may be anti-strategic - but what are the
options? Come out and hear about a PPM methodology based
on the Balanced Scorecard that can help you practically
implement methods to select and activate IT projects
that will measurably drive your strategic agenda and
make you a true partner to the business. Based on
ground-breaking case studies recently published in the
Project Management Journal (December 2004) of PMI,
Professor James Norrie will enlighten and entertain us
with his insights into one of the most complex aspects
of our profession.
Registration will be limited to 40 participants.
