The broad objectives of the procurement process for any
size project are the same. It is necessary to adequately
control the Technical/Quality, Schedule, and cost
performance of the suppliers and contractors on any type
or size of project. Contract requirements for implementing

Bio:
Carl Sergeant
is an Assistant Vice President in Bell Canada’s
Professional Services Group and a Project Management
Professional as certified by the Project Management
Institute. A 25-year veteran of Canada’s
telecommunications industry, Carl oversees an extensive
project management and outsourcing organization at Bell.
This organization is accountable for managing
business-customer contracts that generate $500 million of
revenue each year.
Carl started at Bell in 1980 installing residential
telephones and has worked his way up through the
organization to lead a staff of some 140 project managers,
executives, and directors. In early 2000, Carl joined
Ericsson Canada for 14 months to harmonize the company’s
Canadian project management and engineering arms. After
successfully completing this undertaking, Carl returned to
Bell Canada and was promoted into his current position in
2004.
An avid flyer, Carl holds a private pilot’s license and
tries to fly every weekend that he can.
Presentation outline: Bell Canada
shoots for the sky
How do you change a 140-person project management
organization—one steeped in a tradition of monopoly—into
a highly motivated, competitive professional services
organization that implements $500 million worth of
telecommunications networks and services each year?
Join Carl Sergeant, assistant vice president with Bell
Canada and flying aficionado, as he explains how his
organization is overhauling itself to accomplish this
very goal.
Carl will discuss the business pressures that prompted
Bell to abandon the status quo and reinvent
itself—despite the inevitable internal resistance to
change. He’ll explain the vital importance of creating a
vision for change, getting senior management to buy in,
and generating a groundswell of support from employees.
Carl will also describe several important tactical steps
that Bell took to transform the organization. These
steps include revamping the traditional
employee-supervisor relationship and providing project
managers with new tools and support resources.
Other topics include
- Giving project teams the autonomy to fulfill the
vision
- Creating clear-cut project management career paths
- Training employees to be project management
consultants, not just project managers
Finally, Carl will describe how Bell measures the
success of these initiatives.
An avid flyer, Carl will weave in flying analogies
throughout his talk, suggesting that flying a Cessna 172
Skyhawk and managing a major organizational change have
more in common than one might think.
The special event is being sponsored
by Centennial College
Thanks to: Chris Dudley Chair, Business, New Media and
Information Technology School of Continuing Education &
Corporate Training and faculty member Ragu Nayak.
Registration will be limited to 100 participants.

Lisa Toste,
PMP is a project manager at Bell Canada.
During her career, she has focused on complex
multi-million dollar technology projects. Lisa is a member
of Toastmasters and has a degree in Psychology from the
University of Toronto. She is a dynamic speaker and has
won prestigious awards for her accomplishments in Project
Management.
Presentation outline:
In a perfect world, projects are planned with sufficient
time given for each task. However, in today’s business
market, “faster is better”. With increased competition in
the market place, companies are being pressured to bring
products and services to market within shorter intervals.
This is having a direct effect on Project Managers, their
teams and the methods they use to effectively meet the
Triple Constraints.
Have you ever been asked to complete a project in less
than a reasonable time frame? Imagine working on a
critical and highly visible project with only 1/3rd of the
required estimated time to complete it! That is exactly
what Lisa Toste had to do and
won awards from her company and her client for the
project’s extraordinary results.
In the presentation “Effectively Managing a Crashed/
Fast Tracked Project”, Lisa
Toste will share winning strategies based on her
real life experiences on the art of managing a high-risk
project. Lisa will discuss topics such as:
• Motivating your Team to work from a mindset where the
impossible is possible.
• Communication strategies for high risk projects
• Quality: Doing it right the first time
• Proactive Risk management
• The importance of Change management
• Managing customer expectations
• Negotiating with all parties to achieve a win/win result
• Stress management in a high stress environment

The Bridge Game Workshop
As Project Managers we know the importance of group
effectiveness and strong leadership to the
success of the project, and here is a unique new learning
methodology that could help you to enhance those traits in
your team players.
The Bridge Game is a highly interactive and quickly
engaging work simulation, designed to challenge and
enhance the people skills of everyone involved in
projects.
It’s a mini-project in every way, letting you wrestle
through all the challenges found in a real life venture,
where unwavering team dynamics, strong
leadership and good client focus are the keys
to success.
It builds the right team spirit and team dynamics in
preparation for the actual assignment to come.
Participants learn a lot about themselves and their
teammates, enhancing their soft skills, which are a
crucial factor in delivering their job skills.
It’s a fast paced and cheerful bridge-building exercise,
designed to bring out the real personalities of your team
players, and this appeals to all ranks, gender and age
groups. It’s an excellent character assessment tool in

Presentation outline:
First appearing in software development projects, Agile
Development methods are now a very hot topic in software
development conferences and magazines. These are methods
that stress the speed of development and close interaction
with the customer over traditional, more bureaucratic,
practices.
This presentation will outline the underlying principles
of Agile Development and details of how it differs from
traditional development projects. Then, using an agile
project management method called Scrum, we will illustrate
how agile management methods used in software development
may be extended to projects form other application areas
outside of I/T.
Participants will come away from the presentation with a
high-level understanding of the Agile Development
philosophy and how it differs from traditional development
approaches, enough of an understanding of Scrum to be able
to determine if and how it could be implemented on a
project, and a list of resources for further information
on Agile Development and Scrum.
Due to space restrictions, we are limiting registration to
35 people.
